2016 Sodalitas Gathering in Review

Sodalitas Gathering

Reflections on the Sodalitas Gathering by Jessica Phillips

Last week in Louisville, KY, over 60 Memoria Press homeschoolers from across the country gathered for the second annual Sodalitas Gathering at Highlands Latin School. Sodalitas is a one-of-a-kind experience of learning, encouragement, connection, and inspiration, all within the context of cultivating a classical homeschool using Memoria Press materials.

Sessions included homeschool-specific plenary sessions from Martin Cothran, Andrew Pudewa, and Cheryl Swope, as well as from homeschool parents Sarah Kaye and Jessica Phillips. Panel discussions focused on classical languages and the challenge of teaching multiple levels in the homeschool. Breakout sessions were offered discussing the K-12 big picture, starting a cottage school using Memoria Press materials, and grade-level specifics. Representatives shared about the New American Cursive Program and the Memoria Press Online Academy.

Participants had the opportunity to talk face to face with the knowledgeable and kind Memoria Press staff to plan specific courses of study for their distinct family situations, and to place orders in person. Parents were able to hold and thumb through the entire MP curriculum, preschool through 12th grade, as well as the Simply Classical Curriculum for special-needs students. There was time to laugh, talk, and connect over good food. Personal stories were shared and joy, hope, and encouragement spilled out, filling up souls for the year of study to come.

Part of what makes Memoria Press unique is the intimate connection they have with customer families. The parents that use Memoria Press materials every day in their homes have constant access to the MP staff. The Sodalitas Gathering is unique in the homeschool world and a testimony to the family-centered culture of Memoria Press and Highlands Latin School.

It was a time of deep learning and deep refreshment for all.
