The first reading and printing lessons are critical, and although there are many adequate programs out there, we could not find one with the right combination we were looking for—a balanced, age-appropriate approach to phonics and reading, and a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. First Start Reading solved all of our little problems and made us happy. We hope you like it too!

This set is fine, but the most important parts can be boring and a bit tedious, while the “fun”, coloring exercises are relatively useless. I wound up using it more as a guide or source of inspiration and wrote up my own stories which my children illustrate throughout to demonstrate comprehension. The teacher guide offers a variety of tips on how to teach reading.

This phonics program was a live saver for my daughter. We had gone through 3 other reading programs before landing on this one. She was going into 2nd grade and really could not read. After this program she could read, and has been able to catch up with her grade level.

In preschool, I use a non-consumable program just to get my kids going with reading. I just like to get a little wind in their sails first. After that, we start in on these little gems to solidify phonics, handwriting, and reading. We love them! My daughter sobbed this evening when she discovered that she would be completing book E tomorrow. I asked her what she would miss most about the books and she said “I love everything! I love writing and reading and drawing and the stories and just everything!” It broke and warmed my heart at the same time.
Sometimes I do copywork instead of the dictation depending on the maturity and ability of the child. But you can use these books with all the phonics instruction in the teacher guide or as a boon to whatever you are already doing. Very flexible.
