Volume 1: Ancient Times
From the Earliest Nomads to the Last Roman Emperor
We have always been fans of Susan Wise Bauer’s Story of the World series, but we never seemed able to find room for it in our curriculum in the past. We recently came up with the great idea of adding it as a supplement to our Classical Core packages for summer reading! Read Volume 1 before 5th grade.

Wish I could say we liked this book more as the writing content is great! However, there are disappointingly few illustrations. Especially for the kinds of stories this collection offers, more depictions of people, cities, and events are necessary. It does have a few drawings here and there, and some maps, but no where near what you need to adequately accompany the textual content! If this book was half the price, maybe….but for the price, in my opinion, this book is incomplete.

The Story of the World books are meant to be read with students as young as first grade. As an introduction and survey of world history, they lay a great framework for later learning. The author also has written guides which have maps and study questions. The Activity Books have lists of other books for additional reading. I also bought The Usborne Encyclopedia of World History as one of the recommended books and all the pictures and details you need for young ages are in there. Because Story of the World is a very simplified history, it is a delight to read and not too overwhelming for young minds.
