Description: A literature course designed to teach students how to read
and write about literature by gaining a basic understanding
of plot, character with an emphasis on the short novel. Basic
analysis of poetry is also included in this course. The first
semester of a two-semester course.
Recommended Age: Ideal for 9th -11th grade
but also appropriate for older students.
Content Covered:* A representative sampling
of classic novels by great authors such as Steinbeck's The
Pearl, Melville's Billy Budd, Hemingway's Old
Man and the Sea, Gogol's Overcoat, Solzhenitsyn's A Day in the Life of Ivan Desinovich, Faulkner's The Bear, Joyce's The Dead, Checkhov's Ward
