Description: This course introduces the remarkable novels of Jane Austen.
Austen’s writings are much more than mere “chick
flick” romances – like William Shakespeare, Austen
is one of the preeminent authors of the English language.
Her novels deserve to be carefully studied and enjoyed by
all who appreciate clear writing, insight into human nature,
humor, and memorable characters. This course introduces Austen
through a careful reading of three of her most beloved novels: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice,
and Emma. This is a one-semester course.
Course Requirements: Grading will be based
on (1) timely submission of answers to weekly (or bi-weekly)
study questions, (2) comprehension quizzes on each of the
novels, and (3) a short essay of literary analysis.
Suggested Age: Ideal for 10th-12th grade
students.
Course Materials: For each of Sense
and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma, we will
be using the text in the Norton Critical Edition series. Many
students may already own copies of the titles in other editions,
but for the sake of ease in referring to passages during class
it is strongly urged that all students buy the Norton texts.
Class Chat Time: Tuesday, 11:00am EST
Instructor: Dr. James Taylor, author or Poetic
Knowledge; former head of Hillsdale College's education
program.
Class Credit: Full semester high school credit
