Description: The first semester of a two-semester course covering Algebra 1 by Abeka Book. This is an entry level algebra course for students who have successfully completed an eighth grade level math course. ABeka’s Algebra 1 provides a logical, systematic approach to abstract mathematical concepts. It also supplies many application problems relating algebra to the physical world.

Students are required to use an Iogear Digital Scribe Pen with USB Receiver (www.iogear.com).
In addition, the student will be required to scan their unit tests and email them as attachments to their instructor for grading.
Content Covered: Linear equations; algebraic numbers; graphs; formulas; fundamental operations; special products and factoring; fractions; ratio, proportion, and variation; linear systems of equations; powers and roots; exponents and radicals; and quadratic equations.
Grading: Students will be graded by means of the following: class participation, on-line quizzes, and tests which will need to be scanned or faxed to the instructor for manual grading. (The on-line activities labelled "homework questions" can be attempted as many times as desired and are not included in the course grade. These "homework questions" activities are to be used to prepare for the on-line quizzes.) The on-line quizzes can be attempted twice with only the highest score being recorded. The tests will be graded by the instructor.

*Memoria Press is offering another algebra 1 class this spring. This class will be open to any student even if they have not participated in the Fall 2009 Algebra 1 class. This class, First Semester Algebra 1, is for both those students who are ready to begin their algebra 1 studies and also for those students who need to review some initial algebra concepts before moving on in their algebra 1 studies. This class will start at the beginning of A Beka Algebra 1 and will cover Units 1 - 7 of the book. For those students who would like to complete their algebra 1 studies before next school year, they will be able to enroll in the Summer 2010 algebra 1 class, Second Semester Algebra 1 class.
