Default 3rd grade suggestions?

Hi Tanya!

I am anxiously awaiting my MP K Curriculum for my ds5. We school lightly through the summer so I am just planning on cruising right through the summer with the K program, and starting the 1st grade program when we're finished.

My question regards my older dd8. She will be in 3rd next year, and I'm thinking about getting her on track for MP's studies. We've been following a combined LCC1/LCC2 schedule. I've looked over HLS's curriculum recommendations for 3rd grade, so I have some idea but I was wondering if you had any more specific suggestions for me, especially regarding American/Modern studies, science, and literature? Would the MP lit guides for 2-7 that I saw you mention in another thread be what is used for lit? I was already planning on using D'Aulaire's Greek Myths & the MP study guide, continuing the Christian Studies I that we started this year, and we already had planned on doing some type of Earth Science/Astronomy. As for Latin and math, we will continue to use our current programs.

One more thing, I know you said you will have the 1st grade program (and possibly the 2nd) out this summer. Will you only be releasing one a year after that (so that my dd would always be a year ahead), or will you be able to get out 3rd and 4th by next summer? I know these things are always in flux, but just curious what your thoughts were so that I could do my long-term planning!

Thanks for all your helpful answers you've already given!!

Hello.

You are already doing part of what I would have suggested for 3rd grade - Greek myths and CS1. For literature, I have 3rd grade study guides for Charlotte's Web, The Moffats, and Farmer Boy. These haven't been published yet, but I can sell them to you for $14.95 for the student guide and $24.95 for the student/teacher set (the teacher has the answers layered on).

For science, I like Apologia. Science isn't really my subject, but I've looked at lots of programs at homeschool conventions, and that is the one I hear the most about from parents. Our 3rd graders do astronomy/solar system. I do have a study guide for that, but it is rough. The key is handwritten and we are doing a complete overhaul of the guide, but I've sold it to a few people and they haven't complained! It's just not the quality of our other guides yet. I did notice yesterday in an Apologia catalog I received in the office that they have an Astronomy guide also.

Our 3rd graders do states and capitals for American history. I have a guide for that also. I also have lesson plans that the 3rd grade teachers use. They aren't formatted in the way they need to be for publication, but I can sell them to you as they are if you feel they would help you. I'm snowed in right now, but I'm planning on going to the office as soon as they've plowed me out. If you send me an email, I'll send you a sample week so you can see what they look like.

Regards,

Tanya
