My daughter has completed Prima Latin, Christiana Latin I, then took a tough Latin course with Florida Virtual School. She wants to continue with Latin 2 but doesn't want to do it with FLVS. I'm not sure where to continue. Are there placement test for any of the courses?
We still have Latina Christiana 2. I haven't looked at it for a couple of years, but I fear it may be too easy for a Latin 2 high school class. Any advice? Thanks, K |

Hello.
I agree with you that LCII is not the best choice. Would you consider one of our online Latin courses? If so, we could place your daughter in the most appropriate class based on the material she already knows. We would just need to find out how far she got in her previous Latin and what material she feels she knows solidly. If you aren't looking for online help, I'd recommend that you try our new Forms curriculum (First Form or Second Form) because it provides more teacher help than Henle. But, again, these courses may be too easy depending on your daughter's previous experience. Could you summarize for us the Latin she knows? That would be helpful in trying to recommend the next step for you. Thanks, Tanya |

She just finished this, and received a 99% (A). I just don't know where we should begin for Latin 2. Kaci

Kaci,
Because your daughter has almost finished the grammar I'd say she's ready for a translation program but I would recommend another year of study at least before doing that in order to really master the forms. Buy the first two books of Henle (the purple and the green). Go through the entire first book, learning vocabulary and moving quickly through sections that she has already learned, and slower through new sections. She'll gain a lot of experience with translation and interacting with Latin text. This could take her just under a year, or less, and then you could move into the green book which is a reader. There are a lot of syntactical issues that Henle will cover which are peppered throughout the book, so it is to your advantage to at least glance at every lesson and of course learn the vocabulary. You guys seem to be doing well, slow down a bit, really master/memorize those Latin Forms and keep going! Glen Moore

Thanks for your advice. You mention green and purple books. Is that Henle I and Henle II? I couldn't find a green book.
I agree about 'slowing down'. The class was FLVS and not a mom class. My daughter didn't want to take FLVS Latin 2 because she nearly burned out which is why I can't get her interested in taking Latin 2. If we take your advice and she completes the two Henle books, will she be able to list this as Latin 2 on her transcripts? K |

If you have finished all of the first henle book, you could make an excellent argument for having had two years of Latin. There is far more grammar in there than you would ever get in two years of any grammar course HS or college, and once you're done with that book you know the entire Latin grammar, missing nothing. If you can't get your accrediting agency to allot two years for that then you may want to move agencies.

The purple book is the Henle I, which Mr. Moore is referring to as 2 years of credit and a full Latin grammar. The green book is Henle II, which is a translation course of Caesar and equal to 1 high school credit.
