Default Geography suggestions

I was looking on the Highland Latin School web site to find our what materials you use for geography studies for grades K-4. Could you recommend specific books /resources that you use for these ages. Thank you.

Hello.

Kindergarten-2nd grade doesn't have a formal geography program. They use maps and globes in class to learn where the continents and oceans are, and they always find the places they are studying in literature, history, etc. This incorporates geography into those classes. For example, when reading Mr. Popper's Penguins, they do some research on the Arctic and the climate differences that result in the penguins having difficulty living in America.

Geography study in the 3rd grade is the states and capitals. The students learn to recognize each state on the map with its capital city. The 4th grade learns the western hemisphere, and we utilize the Milliken Map Skills books and Uncle Josh's outline maps. The teachers have put together this curriculum themselves using these resources. The 5th grade learns the eastern hemisphere, and the 6th grade practices mapping the world as they do an intensive American history study. Our goal is to send the students into the Upper School with a good, solid grasp of the world map.

I hope this is helpful.

Tanya
