Answering the question with the question

When I was in school, we were taught to answer the question with the question. If the question is, "Why did the fox want to eat the grapes?", I would answer, "The fox wanted to eat the grapes because......." I noticed in the samples on line that the answers in the literature books are not answered this way. Is my way too "old school"?

I don't think you are old school at all. I have mine rephrase their answer using part of the question BUT they cannot use the word 'because'. I do think it is more appropriate to use that technique when answering short answer or essay questions over little comprehension ones. Sometimes the rephrase gets longer than the answer.

I have mine answer with complete sentences as well. The instructions to the teacher may state that as well. I have comprehension guides that actually do state something along the lines of: though the answers in the teacher's guide are short, we expect children to write a complete sentence to answer the question.
