he didn't use the copy books so would just read over the Bible memory verses in the appendix or should we try to memorize those as well?

It's really up to you how much your student memorizes. Memorization of Scripture is important because anything we have in our heads is always accessible to us in times of need. And we do feel that it is good training for the brain for students to memorize regularly. Our students do memorize a verse each week, and we work for retention of those verses, but you don't have to use the same verses we have chosen.
