Default Story Time Tresures ?

If my DD struggles to read Little Bear should I not start STT yet? Or should I work through it helping her read the books? She is a reluctant reader and we are slowly working are way through our phonics program and will also be using the phonics scheduled in the MP1 guide.

Wink Go at her pace...

Personally, I wouldn't rush her. I have a little guy who has been trying to keep up with his big brother (2 yrs. older) and it's starting to stress him a bit, I think, so I'm going to slow him back down.

Just keep working on the phonics at her pace, unless you start to see a problem that needs to be addressed. Maybe she'll be ready in 6 mos., maybe 12 mos. In our state mandatory reporting/testing isn't until 7 or 8, so I try to keep perspective with that in mind.

Above all, enjoy this time with her.

If it were me, I would wait for her to make a little more progress in phonics first. Just go along at her pace until she is comfortable reading Little Bear with little to no help. Being overly ready is much better than being under ready.

We had success with STT this year, but we held my dd back to repeat 1st grade (she was a young K'er when we started-- late August birthday) due to medical issues that occurred last year and that put us behind completing our course of study.

What a difference a year makes! My daughter read Little Bear with relative ease, and her writing skills were caught up enough that she could do the workbook without tears and frustration. Not so the year before. This is not to brag, but attest to STT effectiveness: my dd scored well above the 90th percentile on the CAT with just completing the first STT guide for LA.

MP has a rigorous curriculum, so no worries if you are a little behind their schedule- you will likely still be getting more than enough for standard grade level/testing.
