Default A couple of questions

Hello! I am new to these forums, and I have a couple of questions about the curriculum. I am very, very excited to try MP because I think it may be exactly what I have been looking for for the last 4 years

Anyway, I have a son who will be going into the third grade. Should I use the Latin Program that comes with the boxed set or should I use the simpler one? He's never been exposed to any form of Latin (and neither have I!)

Also, my daughter is going into first grade. She is behind in her reading because she needed glasses and we didn't know it. She can sound out three letter words, knows her letters and such, but doesn't know long vowels yet. Will the first grade phonics be to advanced for her?

One more thing. I notice that there are changes being made in much of the curriculum. Is it better to wait until later in the summer to order?

Thanks so much for any help!

First welcome! MP is a fabulous company, curriculum, and forum. Obviously, I am happy here.

Latin: The 3rd grade Latin program is a true beginner's program. If you feel a slower intro is a better choice, then go for the Prima. It will not make a difference being 'behind' a level for Latin studies down the road. Having a successful first run is more important to ensuring long term study and enjoyment.

1st: It sounds like your daughter cannot read Little Bear. In that case, I would use Kinder first. First Start Reading is an excellent program and will help get her reading well before tackling the literature guides. The math is the same for Kinder and 1st but 1st runs through the R&S Unit 1 book very quickly by compressing lessons and skipping others then slows down for Unit 2, while Kinder slows down and covers every lesson of Unit 1.

Changes: MP will always replace beta versions of anything you buy free with final versions. If you want to get the books in hand to plan or just look over now, you can call for updated copies later. My understanding is there are minor changes to 1st (adding appendix pages, etc.). I haven't reached 3rd with any of mine yet so I cannot comment. I have not heard of any changes being made there. You might wish to call and ask the office about it before ordering.

One other thing I wanted to mention is you will see on the website 3rd having R&S English and MP's new English listed. You can choose which to use. If you choose R&S, be sure you call the office and ask for the R&S plans as the web version has only the new MP Eng. MP English is designed for a child using Latin study as the Latin itself teaches grammar that applies to English as well.

Once again, welcome!

Hello.

The only change I anticipate in the 1st grade curriculum guide is the addition of some science resource suggestions and maybe some minor changes to the art selections. Other than that, it is ready to go. And I'm not anticipating any changes to the 3rd grade. It is in good shape. But, as Enigma said, if we do end up making changes, you can always get the most updated plans as replacements.

Regards,

Tanya Charlton
