I would like some more information about this book.
I have decided to purchase the First Form Latin complete set with DVDs; this a major expenditure for me, but I think that it will be worth it. I will be using it with a 14, 12, 10, and 8 year-old. The 14 year-old has been trudging through Henle I on her own with the help of the Study Guide, so we already have the Henle Grammar book. We also have the Lingua Angelica CD, which we have been listening to together. My plan is for all of us to watch the FF DVDs and practice the flashcards together as well as continuing to listen to LA. That will be the extent of Latin for the 8 and 10 this year. The 12 year-old will use the FF text and workbook, and the 14 year-old will continue to work through Henle with FF as reinforcement. My question: Would Latin Grammar for the Grammar Stage be helpful or superfluous for our situation? |

You will be fine with your Henle grammar. Our Latin grammar is just simplified and easier for students to use, but the Henle has everything in it that you will need.

Greetings from Australia!
I was using Shurley Grammar but was hoping to give all it up once I started doing Latina Christiana. From this forum, I see that I apparently need to still cover some areas which are not covered in Latina Christiana for a complete English curriculum. Could anyone let me know specifically what else I need to cover outside of Latina Christiana? Many thanks, keep up your fantastic work. |

Hello.
We have been using Rod & Staff grammar in our school, but we are backing up from it so that we can spend more time writing. We used to do the entire Rod & Staff grammar books, but it was so much repetition that we are only doing pieces of it now. I can give you an example of what we are choosing to do in 6th grade if that would give you an idea. We are doing clauses, word order in sentences, paragraph development, principal parts of verbs, verb tenses, transitive/intransitive verbs, linking verbs, predicate adj./nominative, active and passive voices, nominative/objective/possessive/demonstrative/indefinite/interrogative/relative case pronouns, and everything there is about capitalization and punctuation. As you can see, we are choosing to do in English those topics that will complement the Latin grammar study. Students don't make the connection between a predicate nominative in English and a predicate nominative in Latin, so we make that connection for them. And we also concentrate on the mechanics of good sentence writing, paragraph writing, paper writing. Our goal is for our students to master the sentence by the end of 3rd grade - a good, concise sentence. This is more difficult than it sounds, and it takes a lot of modeling, which we accomplish through our literature study guide comprehension questions beginning in 2nd grade. As we complete our lesson plans for 3rd-6th grades, I'm really hoping to make a more deliberate connection between what students are doing in Latin and what they will be doing in English grammar, connecting their Rod & Staff lessons to our Latin programs. I hope this helps! Regards, Tanya Charlton |
