My daughter was confused with 2 of the translations at the bottom of the quiz. She was not familiar with Sapientiae for knowledge...she chose scientiae and exercitus for army...she ended up looking that up in the back of the book.

Also, the correct translation for: "A small army was near the gates of the city" begins "Exercitus parvus..." However, we were confused by the adjective following the noun and how size is considered quantity in the Grammar explanations on pg. 24 of the teacher's manual which means it should precede the noun.

Please explain why these two vocabulary words are being used when she has not had them before...or at least tell me which lessons they are found in. Also, please explain the sentence order for that third translation.

Very confused,

Grace,

No wonder you are confused! Your daughter is right on all counts. We have corrected 'knowledge' to be 'scientiae' in our latest edition, but you must have the edition before that. 'Exercitus' is not taught until lesson 24, so I need to take that out of this quiz. And, though word order is not essential in Latin, we did teach a general word order and need to follow it. My copy editor has already marked this in my book to fix. It should read "parvus exercitus."

I apologize for these errors. We work hard to catch them all, but it seems we never get there. I appreciate your taking the time to notify us, so that we can get them corrected. I know that this doesn't help you any, but it sure does help us!

And, it appears that your daughter is a fine Latin student. When she doesn't understand something, she takes the time to flesh it out. That is a great sign that she is being truly educated, and I commend you. And tell her I said thanks for the proofing!

Regards,

Tanya
