My 9 year old will be in the middle of 4th grade next year when we finish LCI. He is doing well and I had planned to move to LCII. Now I've seen that FF is recommended after LCI? Oh help please. :) What is recommended for a 4th grader completing LCI?

Kathy,

I would recommend that you move to First Form after LCI if you are serious about a Latin study that will end with the actual translating of Latin literature. LCII is a good choice if you just want to do a couple of years of Latin but are not seriously considering continuing your Latin study. First Form has 4-5 pages of worksheets for each lesson, really grounding the students in the grammar. And it will lead you directly to Second Form, which will continue that grammar study.

I would be glad to talk further with you about this if you still have questions and want to give me a call.

Thanks,

Kathy,

I agree with Tanya in that it depends on your goals... First Form is the first of 4 1/4s that will eventually take you through the entire grammar. If you got the LCII route.. you'll have the good solid core of the Latin Grammar and will be able to easily move into Henle, or the study of other modern languages...

I had thought that First Form was for after LC II and now I have everything I need for LC II, DVDs, Flashcards, student books for my 2 dc and Ludere II. Now I have no clue where to go from here! We are serious about our Latin study, will it truly be bad if I do LC II and go to 2nd form? What are the pros and cons? Money is a factor.

Hello.

Our intention is certainly not to make your life rough. Since you have the materials for LCII, I would go ahead and do it as planned. First Form is not necessarily a better program than LCII; it is just a different approach. If your children do well in LCII, then you can easily move from there to Second Form. There will only be a small gap to bridge, and we will do that for you at the beginning of Second Form. If your children are struggling at the end of LCII, First Form would be a great program to solidify their grammar and do some extra practice before moving on to Second Form. But you don't need to worry about that at this point. Just relax, enjoy LCII, and we'll help you make a decision after that as to where you need to go.

In the meantime, have fun with Latin!

My question is similar to the first one in this thread only my son is even younger. He was an early reader so he did Prima in grade 1 and is doing well in LC1 this year in grade 2. (He has older siblings doing Latin and I have some background in it myself.) He wants to eventually achieve Latin fluency so I'd like to put him in FF next fall, but 8 years old seems very young. I saw another post that said the amount of workbook pages is designed for older students.

Jayne,

Because of the age of your student, plenty of review needs to be folded into your path to fluency. I would move to LCII, and then to first form...

I'm glad I'm not the only one confused about how to fit in LCI/II with FF and Henle. I have a few questions in that regard.

First, I have 6th grade twin boys finishing LCI. They both had progressed to LCII previously, but I found that they were completely lost in the translation sections of LCII, so I had them start over this past year. They are doing well now and seem to grasp the concepts better.

Our plan had been to continue on to LCII in 7th grade, take a break from Latin in 8th to do a year of Spanish, then resume Latin progressing from Henle I to IV between 9th and 12th grades. We were also planning to add high school Spanish in 11th and 12th grades. What is the best schedule for them? If they did FF next year, or even the next 2 years, how easily would they move into Henle compared to LCII?

I also have a 4th grader who was going to follow a similar schedule, as well as younger children (2nd grade down to 2 years old). Am I understanding correctly that FF in intended to be a 4 year program, and that following its completion, students are ready for Henle II?

I like your weaving of the two languages. I think you boys will benefit from seeing how easily they pick up spanish after a few years of Latin. There are a few things you need to know before you embark on the 5-6 year plan.

1. Henle I teaches the entire grammar from start to finish.
2. LCII ends at ~half way through the grammar
3. After a year away from Latin your boys are going to need a good solid review
4. It is likely to take your boys 1-2 years to get through the whole grammar

All that said, I think your boys will do well to finish LCII again... and then come back to Henle a year later, just make sure that they don't whip through the Henle I book... they will need to have mastered the grammar being able to recite all the verb and noun forms with great ease. This done translation will be a snap.
