Salvete,

I had been studying Latin for six months using Jenney's book 1, within a class setting; unfortunatly I am no longer able to continue with the class setting and I am looking for a different approach to learning Latin on my own or possibly on line.

Any suggestions

There are several options:

Wheelock's Latin: This is a course developed to enable GI's returning from WWII, with GI-bill money in their pockets to pass the Latin Entrance exams which colleges still had at that time. It is a good solid program, but by design, a crash course if you will.

Henle Latin: This is a standard of excellence for Latin instruction. It was developed for Comprehensive High School Latin programs, circa 1950's and is still being used today. It is an excellent place for adults to start since it is more meaty, has tons of exercises and will take you through the entire grammar after the completion of the first book.

I would recommend Henle, since we also teach these online and so even if you start on your own you can join one of our online classes later. The online classes are great environments for learning Latin. There are online quizzes/tests, 1.25 hours/week of direct grammar instruction in real-time with a live instructor, and round the clock forum access for any other questions. We've been doing these for two years now and they have only gotten better and more effective. I highly recommend them. If you were going to sign up for a course I would recommend HS I Fall 2009.
