What is the difference between vir, viri and homo, hominis?

Do both words mean "man, men?" Does one word mean "mankind?" Thank you to anyone who can clarify this for us.

Homo means 'man' as a male person, and it also means 'person' in general. Vir means 'man' as a manly creature and is related to the word vires meaning 'strength'. It also means 'hero' and 'man as hero'. Paul OBrien.
