View Full Version : Recitation? Form Drills? How do I "test" myself?

After reading Leigh Lowe's article at the MP website about how to conduct a formal oral recitation and form drills in a classroom, along with Mrs. Cheryl Lowe's article, "Let's Memorize the Latin Grammar," I am wondering how an adult who is teaching herself Latin could accomplish this? How does a self-taught student conduct oral recitations and form drills? I don't know enough grammar yet to "test" myself, but I feel I need more practice and reinforcement that simply going through the exercises in Henle I. Thanks for any advice on this!

I'm not sure what happened to my previous reply. Did some admin think it was offensive? Anyway, there is a free forms drill called Lingua Latina (AKA Win Latin) that used to be available online. It was very helpful to me when I was learning. I have a copy of it if you want it. There is another company that puts out form drill programs that I 've used effectively at www.centaursystems.org, but you have to pay for them.

Thank you, Mythopoeic! I couldn't find the Win Latin (it must be unavailable now), but I am interested in this. How could you send me a copy?
Also, I am looking into the Latin Flash Drill and Latin Vocabulary Drill from Centaur Systems. I'm not sure how it works, with the modules and pricing. What modules would I get, since I'm in Henle (I don't see that listed -- so does that mean I would order "General")? What form of delivery do you recommend -- download or installer CD? Do I need the manual? Thanks!

Hi Sahamamama
Send me an email at [myusername]@gmail.com replacing [myusername] with mythopoeic and I'll send you the WinLatin file.
the general vocab module should work well for you. All the modules have similar vocabularies, but are keyed to their respective textbooks. I used first the Wheelock module (even though I didn't learn Latin from Wheelock) and then the General module and found they overlapped quite a bit. The general vocab list I believe contains the standard college board requirements for reading Vergil, Livy, and Cicero. All you need is to purchase the module. You can get the cd and manual if you want it, but all the modules are in the demo, and by purchasing a module you get the key to unlock the module. The manual is embedded and accessible from the program, too.

Mythopoeic, are you willing to send that file out to other forum members as well?
Thanks
Adriana

I just found a link to the Win Latin file (worked as of 12/23/08)
www.latinomedia.it/WLATIN56A.EXE
It starts the download directly.

Sure am, Adriana, but it looks like you got the right file already. If that link fails and anyone still needs a copy, they can email me.
