View Full Version : Latin & Phonics, Oh My!

I will be introducing our DD, 4.5yr, to K this fall, following the Latin-centered method and Core Knowledge. She has already master English vowel sounds and most consonants and will use a systemetic, phonics-based reading program.

My concern is introducing a foreign language before learning English. Though Latin letters, sound and written, is not that different from English, some of the vowels sounds are. My concern, for DD, is early confusion. DH does not see why DD couldn't learn both at the same time, I'm just not convinced that I shouldn't wait a year, or atleast until she has begun to read.

Any thoughts or experience in this area?

Thx much,

It seems to be common wisdom to make sure the child has a firm grasp on reading before introducing Latin. It can and is done simultaneously sometimes, but generally it's best to wait, so I've heard. It makes sense to me, and besides, there's no rush. Phonics is a complex system. Why complicate matters when there is still plenty of time?

I concur. My 1st concern is taking her through an extensive phonics program. I think I'll focus on that first and take it year-by-year as to when I'll introduce Latin. I'm sure we'll start by 3rd grade.

This wasn't a nail bitting situation - - it was discernment that brought me to this crossroad in the first place.

Thx for your time and input.
