I read with great interst the articles "Why Read Homer's Iliad" and "Joe Knows Latin" in the Spring issue of The Classical Teacher. I would love to read these great books with my children (we homeschool). However, since we live in Maryland it is impossible to send them to Highlands Latin to recieve this instruction! Are you planning on publishing any type of guide for these works?Do you have any suggestions, or, can you direct me to some good resources for discussing these works to my family (and myself!)? Obviously I am looking for some guide that is suited for children at the age levels you mentioned (seventh and up), but possibly lower ages as well.
Thank you! And, by the way, I am very pleased and impressed with all the Memoria Press curricula I have used.

I agree that guides for some of the most basic Great Books would be invaluable! Ideally, a guide for The Iliad, for instance, would include help for different stages - - -maybe using some of Campbell's recommendations in LCC. For example, it could describe picturebooks and storybooks to use for K-2 students and what kind of discussion points you could have. Then, it could have advice for the grammar years and the key points, resources, etc. before moving on to the high school years. I love CHC's Catholic Great Books guides. It would be wonderful for Memoria Press to publish something similar for the Great Books like The Iliad, The Odyssey, The Aeneid, Dante's Divine Comedy, etc. I second this suggestion!!:D

There's a book called "Heroes of the City of Man" that has reviews and study guides for the Aeneid, Iliad, and Odyssey. You can find it here: http://veritaspress.com/prodinfo.asp?number=110240

The Rockbridge Academy is located in Annapolis and may be able to provide you with some guidance that's closer to home.

Do any of the guides make recommendations as to which translation to use?
Mandelbaum seems the only good translation for the Aeneid right now. He's also good for Dante, but there are other good choices for the Divine Comedy, as well.
