My 4th grader has been struggling with LC I this year. He did very well with Prima Latina so I expected him to do well again. But every week it's like we have to start all over. He's up to Lesson 16. Several lessons ago, we went back to the first DVD and watched every lesson together with me explaining the difficult concepts. And now I do a review of the upcoming DVD lesson prior to his watching it. But he still struggles with just about everything. This is really unlike him as school as always been easy for him.

I'm considering just stopping him where he is and studying French next year for a break.

Any ideas or thoughts??

Thanks,
Valerie

Hi,

My suggestion would be to slow down, not give up. I have taught this level to those in 3rd grade and up. I have found that to go slower with repetion is better than plowing through. With my own children at home and with my students at school, I covered LC I & II over three years, starting in 3rd grade. I have also found that 5th graders are much more capable and doing LC I in one year is a good pace for them. Your 4th graders is in a "tweener" spot. His/her brain may not be quite ready for the concepts when they come so fast. Try doing a lesson over two weeks with lots of vocab review and doing parts of each exercise each day.

Hope this helps,

Sue

I remember when I was learning German in High School...... possessives just kicked my butt!!! For whatever reason, I just didn't understand the concept! A few years later when I took German in College.......... I had absolutely no problem with German grammar....... who knows, maybe that latent grammar braincell finally woke up?! :p

Perhaps a bit of a break would be a good thing............ if you can't pin it down to one thing and have reviewed..... then perhaps some time away from it may help.
