My 4th grade ds is finishing LCI but it was a bit of a stretch for him. I think LCII would be too much for next year and would rather wait until 6th grade to do it. However, I don't want to just skip Latin and have him forget everything. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Julia,

Congratulations on finishing up LC I and thanks for answering some of the other posts on this board.

One approach that many parents use is a blend of LC I and II. Have your son review the grammar in Latina Christiana I while learning only the new vocabulary, songs, and prayers in Latina Christiana II (skipping the grammar). This will keep Latin fresh in his mind and make it easier once you are ready to tackle the grammar in LC II. It essentially splits LC II into a two year course and gives your son time to really master the material.

Others may be able to post ideas that have worked for them.

Have you thought about doing Lingua Angelica? That might be a good way to keep up with the Latin and learn some beautiful music at the same time. Go as slow as you need to.

Thanks, Brian, that sounds like a good plan. Now that you mention it, I think Mother of Divine Grace suggested this in their lesson plans. And thanks, Nanci, for the reminder about LA. I've enjoyed using this with my older kids. In fact, it was the beginning repetoire for a small choir which we have formed with a few families. I'll have to use selections from it with my son this year so he'll understand better what we've been singing.

We faced the very same problem. Our son did LC I in second grade, and just was not ready for LC II for third. Our solution was to use a combination of Ludere Latine and the LC I DVD's and flashcards for the intervening year. In fact, we just finished this today. It really worked with my little guy, and he seems to have a much clearer grasp of the LC I concepts than he did at the end of his last school year, and I think that he will be ready to tackle LC 2 when we start back "to school."

Here is our schedule for the first lesson:

Day 1: Watch DVD lesson 1
Day 2: Complete LL worksheet, page 7
Day 3: Complete LL worksheet, page 8
Day 4: Review Flashcards for Lessons 1-3

If you think that this might work for you, I would be more than happy to email the entire years' schedule to you (4 days/week, for (I think) 32 weeks). Just let me know here if you want it, and I will give you my email address.

Hi,
I came to this board wondering the same thing. My 5th and 7th graders just finished LCI and I was planning on going on to LCII. But, to be honest, I don't think we put enough effort into LCI. I just got my Book of Roots in the mail today and was contemplating running my two boys through that with some review of LCI this next year. Then the year after that I'll pick up LCII. (Maybe they'll have a Book of Roots for LCII by then ;) .

I'm not in any hurry to blaze through latin. I feel like we still have time to make sure it sinks in.

We've completed lesson 15 of LC I and are using the first Ludere Latine book for review. We focus on the crossword puzzles that require the student to know the forms and also vocabulary. Although it's an excellent review, my dd thinks of it as a game - certainly a plus around here!
