LC II -- 3rd conjugation question

I see in the teacher's notes of LC II (p 87), the 3rd declension masc/fem genitive plural is given as " -ium" rather than "um". I'm assuming by the boldface "i" that the "i" isn't a consistent part of the ending. When does the "i" appear?
