This question may have been asked before, but I would like to know the high school Latin equivalency for Henle I. I have heard one year (it does say "First Year" on the cover!) and other places I have heard two. Which is more accurate?

Thanks for your responses.

Michelle,

Completing all of Henle I, regardless of how long it takes to do so, is worth two years of high school Latin. I say this because Mother of Divine Grace School, which is an accredited school, awards two credits for finishing Henle I.

In the introduction to Henle I, Fr. Henle himself says that completing the first seven of the fourteen units is sufficient for one year of Latin. The rest of the units are supposedly for advanced classes. However, schools of Fr. Henle's time used to be much more rigorous than schools of today. Also, homeschoolers have found that completing all (instead of only the first seven units) of Henle I before moving on to Henle II is best because we have no experienced Jesuit teacher (Fr. Henle was a Jesuit) to help us with our Latin!

Hope this helps,
Maria

Dear Maria:

Thanks so much for the info. on Henle I Latin! I have been confused about this myself. We have been working through the book slowly, at first following one syllabus, and then the other. I was using the MODG syllabus, but it was moving a little too fast for our girls, so we have stopped using any guide at all and have just worked through most of the exercises on our own. I think we'll definitely be able to finish the book within a year from now.

Thanks for your response, though. I would like to make sure I'm counting this properly towards h.s. credit.

Very truly,

Michelle
