I have tried to use LC I some with my rising 6th grader the past couple of years . I haven't devoted enough energy to it and he knows some but not thoroughly, by any means.

Now my daughter who is a rising 4th grader is supposed to begin LC I this coming year. Should I just teach them both from LC I or try to do LC I with her and move my son (6th) to do LC II as per his lesson plans (MODG)?

I also will have a kingergarten-age daughter to add to the mix this coming schoolyear and a very rambuctious toddler boy.

Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. I do not know Latin except for a very few phrases. I hope to learn it myself now, as well. I do know a good amount of Spanish so hopefully that will help a tad bit??

And I'm sure my Southern drawl will sound pretty funny speaking Latin, LOL!

Hi JoAnna,

If your 6th grader hasn't mastered LC I, I would just use it with both of your kids. In addition to being a good review for your 6th grader, it will be much easier on you.

See our article, The Four Principles of Latin Instruction for the importance of mastering the Latin grammar.

Here's what worked very well for me last year with LC1: Half an hour a day, with one 7th and one 3rd grade boy; and my 1st grade daughter's assignment was to sit at her desk in the schoolroom and draw during that half-hour...so, she absorbed much, and is eager to learn Latin for real, soon.
The great thing is to be able to do the recitations together. So any way that you can form a group, go for it. (My boys would imitate cheerleaders, air force academy cadets, etc., we would choose characters from a set of cards I made.)
This might have to be during toddler's naptime. (I schedule the kids' time using MOTH. )
Have agreat time with it. I studied the front section of the book several times during the year, and I followed her directions. God bless you.

I'd use LC1 with both - combine wherever possible, is my motto!

Also, mastery is very important, especially in a subject like Latin, so I think the review would be very beneficial for the older child.

I'd also highly recommend the DVDs - which are now available - they make our job, as homeschooling Mothers, SO much easier!

Hope that helps!
