My native language is English. Throughout my life I have studied several foreign languages. From my experience I have learned that I strongly dislike to use my native language to build a foundation in a foreign language. I have always tried to use the foreign language that I was studying, as much as possible, to learn that foreign language.

Some time ago I tried to begin my study of Latin by studying Wheelock's book, but soon stopped as I found that I could not tolerate the method that it uses of relying primarily on English to instruct Latin.

Recently surfing the Internet I discovered and bought a book called “Lingva Latina Per Se Illvstrata Pars I Familia Romana” by Hans Orberg, that uses only Latin and pictures to teach Latin, including grammar. I have already read the first chapter and found it to be a joy.

I you do not have one already, I would recommend that you explore the option of developing a Latin program that mainly employs the Latin language, in conjunction with visual and audio aids, to teach the Latin language. Such a program will appeal to the people in the world that do not like to use there native language to learn a foreign language.

For further development along this route, I'd recommend, if you can find them, any latin texts written "ad usum serenissimi delphini." It's an old series written for the Dauphin that includes the latin text, beneath that a latin paraphrase, and then commentary notes all in latin. It will build your vocabulary very quickly.

The series went out of print in the 19th century, and the copies you can find in rare book stores are expensive, but some of them are popping up at google books. Just search for "ad usum delphini."

I chose for myself Apuleius's Metamorphoseon and printed in out and bound it at Kinko's for fifty bucks. I could have formatted it better and printed it for $25.

I will certainly make use of this suggestion as my wife and I work to recover our Latin before teaching our kids.

Great suggestion.

If anyone is still looking for "ad usum Delphini" titles, there's a page with links (http://www.johnpiazza.net/adusumdelphini) at John Piazza's site.
