Hi- I am wondering why Highlands Latin School uses Warriner's Grammar for 5th grade. I thought that the LC and Henle had enough Grammar included in them??? It has only been since the summer that I have switched to a Latin-centered curriculum, so please forgive my ignorance.

Also, HLS doesn't specifically say which Math they use, but I was wondering which homeschool curriculum seems to teach math in the most traditional classical way? Just wondering...

TIA,

Nanci

I asked the same question about Warriner's and received the following answer from Brian Lowe:

We use Warriner's Grammar as a reference in our Latin and literature courses. Whenever students are having difficulty, our teachers may use Warriner's for exercises or examples. It is a great book to have in your library.

It isn't that we dislike English grammar books and will not let them in our
school. We use them whenever they can add to the student's understanding. We just don't have an entire separate course for English grammar.

HTH!

Yes, we teach English Grammar primarily through Latin at HLS, but we do find it helpful for students to have access to the Warriner's Books when a topic needs additional coverage. The Warriner's Books are also helpful in that they provide additional usage, capitalization, punctuation, and composition lessons that round out the student's Latin and literature courses, the foundation to our grammar and language arts curriculum.

As far as math, we use out-of-print Macmillan books from the early 80's combined with our own curriculum.

Is anyone familiar with Ray's Arithmetic?

I am familiar with it. I used it for awhile with my kids, but then switched to Strayer-Upton Practical Arithmetics. It takes kids through 8th grade level arithmetic and has much better explanations so the kids don't ask me questions every 30 seconds. Very cost effective too. It's straight arithmetic, though. Mathematics will need to be taught after that by Ray's or whatever you choose.

Here is a review for Practical Arithmetics by a HS company:

This company also sells Ray's. I'll warn you that the print is much smaller in Ray's.
