In the French book lesson 5, we are taught that the French strongly dislike two vowels next to each other. I am unclear, even after listening to the cd, on how to pronounce "Il a un an." It seems overloaded with piggybacking vowels! Help.

This is how "il a un an" is pronounced.
eel ah uh nah(n)
There is a liason/sound connection between "un" and "an." What that means is that when a word with an unpronounced ending consonant( un) is followed by a word starting with a vowel (an), the last consonant sound ("n" of un)becomes pronounced .
This verbal liason/connection is done in order for the listener to better understand what is said .

Proper pronunciation is really important in all dialects.
