I have some questions on which Latin to choose.....

I have an upcoming 3rd gr 9yo ds and a 6th gr 11yo dd (just turned 11). We (including me) have absolutely no Latin knowledge. My 9yo has had almost no grammar. I was thinking I would choose Prima Latina but after reading some of the post I'm wondering if I should go with Latin Christiana I. I don't want the 9yo to struggle, if he does he will decide right off he does not like it. I want it t be easy enough that they enjoy it yet are learning at the same time and I would really like them to learn together if that's possible. I realize that dd would probably be able to move much faster than ds, so I'm just not sure where to start.
If I choose to use the DVD's, will I still need to purchase the teachers manual?

Hello-

I also have a 9 son and 11 yo daughter. We are just starting out with homeschooling - this will be our first year. I am choosing our curriculum now -and have the same question. I wondered about the Prima Latina vs. the Latina Christiana. Also wondered about starting the Logic 6 semesters course since my daughter will be in 6th grade. Any experience, advice or suggestions will be much appreciated. Thank you!

Have you checked out http://www.memoriapress.com/articles/start_latin.html? It should help both of you.

As to starting logic with a sixth grader: I think you should wait a year. (See http://www.memoriapress.com/articles/How-to-Teach-Logic.html.) Not only is the first logic book designed for 7th grade and up, but also it is good not to start too many new things at one time.

we are scenario 1, but according to the chart my 9yo should start with Prima Latina and 11yo should start with Latin Christiana I. I guess we will start with the Prima Latina and hope that it doesn't bore my 11yo? I had rather it be too easy for the 11yo than to use Latin Christiana and it be too hard for the 9yo.

If you don't mind paying for two different courses, I think you should get both Prima Latina and Latina Christiana I. My reasoning is:

First of all, if you use Prima with both children, your son is going to like it but your daughter is probably going to need to move a lot quicker through the book than your son.

On the other hand, if you use Latina Christiana I with both children, your son is going to need to proceed through the book a lot slower than your daughter.

In both cases, you won't be benefiting from having them both learn from the same book at the same time because they'll be moving at different paces.

Otherwise, I really don't know what you should do. I suppose going with Prima would be better than going with Latina Christiana I.
