I'm desperate to start a classical school, and thought, "Well, I couldn't do it in my living room." Then I read Cheryl Lowe's story. How does this work? Can I really start a school in my home? What is a "cottage school?"

Yes you can start a school in your home. The key is to start with a subject like Latin, logic, rhetoric, etc. (whichever you are most comfortable teaching, but Latin is the most popular) These subjects may be difficult for a homeschooling parent to teach on her own or not available at a student's current school.
By offering a challenging core subject that can't be found elsewhere, you can attract good students and involved parents. Start with a single class or two. You might only have 5 or 6 students in it, but that will be plenty for the first year. From there, if you do a great job, the parents will ask you to add more subjects and classes. The school will grow itself, and your only problems will be finding more teachers and offering the classes parent's are begging you to add. And, those are good problems for a growing school to have.
This is the simplified version of starting a school in your home. Of course, I left out the hard work and perseverance, but that is a given to start anything great.
Good luck and be sure to call us if we can help.

Then I read Cheryl Lowe's story.
I have searched the site for this story. Where may I find it, please?

Yes, that was one of the first places I looked. I just thought there was more hiding somewhere. I am in the process of starting a cottage school of sorts to begin in January this year, and thought her story might be helpful.
Thank you for your prompt reply!

I am an in home daycare provider and would like to change the daycare from infants, pre school, and before and afterschool kids to taking in homeschooed kids while the parents work. Is this possible if the parent meets the guidelines for homeschooling their child, and if the parent chooses the child studies? If so how do I do it without having a daycare license.

Hello,
I would love to also start a " Cottage School" in my area( Winchester, KY). I've been gradually switching to a more Classical approach with my son and am ready to really embrace all forms of Classical education. I have been teaching private art classes for 11 years and wish to write a special art instruction curriculum to compliment Classical studies. I teach art using methods from the 19th century European Ateliers( studios). If anyone is interested in forming a cottage school in my area please email and let me know.:)
