Chapter 5 Day4 Question#19
I've struggled through Chapter 5 by looking at the answers when needed and I've watched the DVD twice. I think I understand how to convert sentences into propositions, but I don't understand how to use the propositions to form a syllogism that is not in the first figure. Can anyone help me? Thanks,
 Hana

Hana,

I noticed that it's been a long time since you've posted this question. I hope you figured this out in the mean time. If not or for anyone else who is interested, here's how the first syllogism (Disamis) could be done:

1) Begin by writing down the form if it helps
Some M is P
All M is S
Some S is P

2) Add what you know (I took the conclusion from exercise #4)
Some M is harmful to your health
All M is television viewing
Some television viewing is harmful to your health

3) Now the fun part...think of a middle term that makes the syllogism, ideally, sound (its always a good idea to strive for soundness!)

Some non-thinking television programs are harmful to your health
All non-thinking television program watching is television viewing
Therefore, some television viewing is harmful to your health

Let me know if this doesn't help.
