Teaching children to become active readers ...
Children who are asked to read slightly above their comfort level will develop into superior readers. Our reading program for grades 2-7 continues the development of reading skills through the selections listed above. Reading is not a passive activity for pleasure. Reading requires an active, discriminating mind that is challenged to think, compare, and contrast. Students who have been challenged by good literature will never be satisfied with the poor-quality books that are so readily available today.
Literature study guides train students to become active readers. Our guides focus on vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, and composition skills. Words to pronounce and spell prepare students for each chapter and words to define build vocabulary. Comprehension questions teach students to think about what they have read and to learn to identify the important content of each story. Comprehension questions also teach students the advanced skill of composing a clear, concise answer to a question, a difficult skill at any age. Writing is thinking, and good questioning stimulates the child to think and to write.

My kids are 5th, 4th, 2nd and K-5/1st and
they could ALL participate in the Literature. (My 5yo could do any quote from The Hobbit and also answered some of the questions orally when we discussed it. He and
my 2nd grader have listened to the audiobook). I loved this guide. Thanks! -Toni
I cannot say enough how much I appreciate MP materials. I started a struggling reader on your materials last year after completely scrapping everything else we were using. Now she is not only a strong reader, she enjoys reading and writing enough to do so regularly without being asked.
Thank you.- Angie F.
I tend to want to trust Memoria Press most in all of this simply because I think they have excellent materials and because they provide very cogent articles in support of their position. They seem to be running a very successful school as well.
- Brian G.
Discouraged because my daughter was not picking up on her reading like I had hoped, and really needing some direction, someone at MP suggested the Storytime Treasures. Since I had all but one of the books at home already, I purchased the guides and started them right away. It was just what I needed! Because she knew that she would be answering questions about vocabulary and content, it seemed like she made an effort to focus on the readings more. And we got an appropriate amount of practice with sentence formation/writing skills. After that I went to your website and began to read articles, check out the forums and add more classical curriculum into our classroom. My classroom was transformed and suddenly the kids were excited about school. At first I thought that was strange because the materials were not more exciting or fun (like people tell you school must be), BUT they were less time consuming, more straightforward, more logical to their stage of development. I think the kids were already getting burnt out because the material I was using was so lengthy and overdone and they weren't retaining any of it. My daughter is an excellent reader and reads without being asked. She requests specific books from the library and reads them in her spare time. She read that George Washington used to keep journals with things he had learned, so she started keeping notebooks too. She is only a second grader! Anyway, there's no turning back now. -Angie
